TESOL Introduction: I always believe that the purpose of learning a second language is for communication and growth of knowledge. When I first started learning English, I am afraid to speak English because I am afraid of making mistakes. At that time, teacher taught English using traditional methods which is the students were asked to bear in mind what teachers told in class. Now, I believe speaking is still my greatest weakness. That is the reason why when I became an English teacher, I took TESOL Advanced Program to improve my teaching methods constantly. I have gained so much through this training.
TESOL Student-centered Teaching Mode: In a student-centered teaching model, teachers and students play an equally active role in the learning process. The teacher’s primary role is to coach and facilitate student learning and overall comprehension of material, and to measure student learning through both formal and informal forms of assessment, like group projects and class participation. In the student-centered classroom, teaching and assessment are connected because student learning is continuously measured during teacher instruction.
TESOL Process: In the past, I thought warm-up session is unnecessary process which is time-consuming at the beginning of the class. After the TESOL training, I particular like this session and would like to come up with all forms of games and activities. The purpose of warm-up session is to stimulate students’ interest in learning and get them thinking topics. Also, I learned several effective teaching methods during my TESOL training.
TESOL TPR Method: Total physical response is a language learning method based on the coordination of speech and action. TPR is based on the way that children learn their mother tongue. The teacher instructs and the students physically responds, that means listening should develop before speaking. Once listening comprehension has been developed, speech develops naturally and effortlessly out of it. Especially in my vocabulary class, I prefer using TPR method connected with actions, such as smile, chop, headache, etc.
TESOL Cooperative Learning Method: Cooperative learning method sparks engagement in classroom by encouraging interaction among the students themselves. The teacher, rather than calling on one student at a time, allows children to discuss class materials with buddies or in groups, thus maximizing the level of participation. No longer a one-man show, the teacher’s role becomes that of a facilitator instead. This, in turn, leads to higher achievement, while promoting both team and class building.
TESOL Rassias Method The Rassias method is one of my favourite methods using in the class. The goal of it is to make the participant feel comfortable and natural with the language in a short period of time. Creating a safe and shameless learning environment is significant for beginner, which strengthen students’ confidence and encourage them to speak English bravely. Every student feels equal when they are in a circle and they not gonna be shy or afraid of making mistakes.
TESOL Summarizing: I also learned more teaching skills of how to teach listening, reading, writing, speaking, vocabulary and grammar. I benefit a lot from what I have learned in TESOL Advanced Course. Through these different methods to teaching, I can gain a better understanding of how best to govern my classrooms, implement instruction, and connect with my students.
